The New Zealand Poetry Society annual competition runs an annual poetry competition from 1 March to 31 May. The competition, which has been running since 1990, is open to members and non-members, with members receiving an entry fee discount. All entries are eligible to be published in our annual poetry anthology.
Poets can enter four separate entry categories.
- Open verse for adults (18 years and over)
- Open verse for young people (17 years or younger)
- Haiku for adults
- Haiku for young people.
The junior prize winners are divided into two age divisions: primary/intermediate school, and secondary school. For those outside the New Zealand educational system, the cut-off age between the two is 13 years.
Please take care to choose the correct form. Individuals can choose the Open and Junior Open Section or the Haiku and Junior Haiku Section.
Teachers entering their students’ work should not use the individual forms, but go to the Schools Sections, as there are different rules and entry forms for verse and haiku, plus discounts for multiple entries. Teachers are also welcome to enter their own work in the Open and/or Haiku Section.
